Do I need an accountant if I go into self employment?

Do I need an accountant if I go into self employment?
I'm thinking along the lines of paying my NI contributions and tax and the self assessment forms - I'm very new to this idea so thank you for any advice ;-)

Answer 1 :
It depends on how well you think you ccan deal with this. Without knowing you, its impossible to say.
Answer 2 :
Go to citizens advice bureu. If it's too complicated then you need accountant, if not do it youself
Answer 3 :
Legally you don't need any professional input to your tax forms etc, but you would prpbably be well-advised to talk to an accountant Get estimates of costs form two or three locally - some might be able to put off asking for payment until you are well established - haggle! Your bank might also be helpful. Don't forget indemnity insurance if you are in business - again, bank might help.
Answer 4 :
No, but I would recommend one. Try and find one that is recommended by friends, and one that ideally is semi-retired (i.e. not sat in an expensive office and looking to make lots of money). You could do a lot of the accounting yourself, you probably won't need much more than a spreadsheet. I started out by buying the special 'do you accounts' type ledger books, but you don't acctually need them. Just be organised and keep all your paperwork, receipts, etc and then file it in some speradsheets. I would suggest that you do use an acconutant to check the figures that you come up with at year end, and perhaps let the accountant submit them for you (or do it yourself online). The more you do (and the clearer it is for your accountant to understand) then the less it will cost you in terms of your accountants time.
Answer 5 :
You don't have to have an Accountant - you could do it all yourself. However, there is no doubt that you will lose out if you don't have an Accountant. An Accountant will make sure that you claim all expenses and allowances that you are entitled to and will probably save you more than his fee. As far as tax and NI are concerned,do what I did. Rather than continually pay Accountants fees for dealing with tax and NI, I found myself a friendly, approachable Accountant who showed me exactly what to do and explained all the paperwork. He does the year end Accounts and is there at the end of the phone if I have any queries during the rest of the year.
Answer 6 :
yes you do need an accountant even if your paying your own tax and national insurance

Can you become an accountant without going to university?

Can you become an accountant without going to university?

Higher Education (University +) - 4 Answers

Answer 1 :
I don't think so
Answer 2 :
No.
Answer 3 :
Yes as far I know it is possible. You can start doing your professional exams without having a university degree, it will just take longer because you won't have any exemptions. Get your few years compulsory experience and hey presto! To disagree with one of the answers, there are in fact a few different accounting bodies through which you can do your professional exams, not just CPA. Whilst admittedly it will of course be harder to get hired if you don't have a university degree, it is possible, because at the end of the day you will have the same qualification. It's just you will have less exams to do with a University degree. I have sucessfully obtained accounting positions without a University degree, although I have only went as far as accounts technician for the moment.
Answer 4 :
Most likely. Check this site out and check the exam requirements. You need a CPA to become an accountant. However, many companies will hire you if you're a fresher, but you need to get cpa within X amount of time, depending on company. Even if you're not required to have a degree...almost nobody would hire you if you got no degree. So you could become an accountant, but nobody hire you. http://www.nasba.org/nasbaweb/NASBAWeb.nsf/wpecusm?openform

can you be an accountant without an accounting degree?

can you be an accountant without an accounting degree?
if, say, you have a degree is math instead?
Financial Aid - 3 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Sort of, is a gray area there, but yes, you could work for a CPA or you could just freelance and do the maths to be submitted to a CPA for checking and legal stuff. Many peoples work in accounting that are not CPAs', as I said, it is a gray area. Ask a CPA about internship or somesuch thing, maybe you can just upgrade your degree to a CPA lickety split. Is worth a try if that is what you want.
Answer 2 :
You can work for an accountant entering numbers but you can't be an accountant without a degree. Any information that needs to be sent to the government ,other than tax returns, has to be reviewed and submitted by an accountant and then they need to be a CPA or a CMA
Answer 3 :
yes you can, in fact, they prefer people with math or engineering degrees rather than accounting cause in an accounting degree you odn't actually do much maths. with accounting more math = better I think you can also do some appreticeships but not too sure about that

Any Accountants in there? Can Some Accountant explain what is ment by Matching, Batching and Coding of Invoice

Any Accountants in there? Can Some Accountant explain what is ment by Matching, Batching and Coding of Invoice
Hello Can you please tell me what is matching batching and coding. what does processing of invoices mean and how do you do them if it is in a Hotel industry. It would be great if you can give me a brief explanation of these works. Thank you.
Careers & Employment - 1 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Ok I will try to answer this.First it depends of what type of invoice you are processing> The one from the suppliers or the one issued by the company you work for. Lets say you process the invoice from suppliers. Matching the invoice means to check the invoice against the purchase order/contract and the reception note. It is usually called a 3 way mathching. Initialy you order products or services, so you have a purchase order or a contract where you specify your product/services needed the guantity the price the delivery day etc etc. You send this purchase order to supplier and they send the goods. You make a receiving note/or note of confirmation for services. This purchase order together with receiving note is send to accountants who will wait for the invoice. Once invoice come the accountant make sure everything is on invoice was ordered and actually received. If mistakes you send the invoice back and announce the purchasing department to solve the issue with the suppplier. So this was in simple words the MATCHING. Once you match an invoice and no issues, you record it inthe system ....the software used by the company to process invoices. Some copmanies are also having the purces order and the receiot inthe system.. depends on how they organize the accountancy... Batching is in general the check performed by the system for the total amount of invoice ..but also for receits and other transaction done by the system. In simple words. Batching is an automatic check of the totals in a 2 way system.. and is done by the software. Coding an invoice it giving a specific number to an invoice. This number is given differently from country to country depending on legislation. So you may want to check it for your country. In my country ( somewhere in europe) this number of the invoice is given by a special institution and it is reglemented by low. Also coding can be an internal number given by the system to eah invoice processed ( either a supplier invoice or an invoice issued to a customer).. in this case the number is given automatically by the system in a sequential way. Please note that these are generic answers... in accountacy always depends on company, software used, legislations and regulation. Bu i hope i gave you a slight idea of what is all about.

I want to become an accountant, however do not have the time to go back to uni, any ideas?
Does any body have any ideas on a good online course? I am living abroad so Open Uni is out of the window as I have to attend occasional lessons on their courses. I have been looking at certain online/long distance learning courses but they are sooooo vague. And I want a recognised qualification, any suggestions?!!! thanks!!!
Studying Abroad - 3 Answers

Answer 1 :
try onlineschools.com or something to that effect I'm enrolled in Strayer.edu
Answer 2 :
Becoming a Chartered Accountant is hard work and requires a few years total dedication. If you have not got the time, don't waste your time. Failed accountants are paid peanuts because there are lots of them. The thing to remember is that the failures have often spent as much time studying as the successes. As you are living abroad, I suggest that you contact the local big accountancy firms for advice. They may even sponsor you.
Answer 3 :
At least two professional bodies have trainers all over the world. Students study part-time and gain internationally recognised professional qualifications. Those that have most success attend evening classes before taking exams. Any correspondence course that is not linked to one of the professional bodies should be avoided. It is likely that the qualification will be worth very little, and so not help you get a decent job. Try these sites: http://www.accaglobal.com/ http://www.cimaglobal.com/cps/rde/xchg/live/root.xsl/index.htm

Higher Education (University +) - 1 Answers

Answer 1 :
You will need to be hired by a firm of Chartered Accountants and will sit the exams under their sponsorship. The process takes about three years if you pass your exams the first time around. Although it is not strictly necessary, the accounting firms normally expect you to have an undergrad degree before you apply as competition is fierce. A First or 2.1 degree in a subject like Maths would probably get you an interview.

You need to join an accounting company as a junior and either by night school or day release from the job take the necessary courses. It will take you about 5 more years to achieve charter status. You cannot get charter status from doing a course. It has to be combined with real work and experience.

To Become an Accountant, Do I Need To Take Mathematics For A Levels or Is GCSE Mathematics fine?
Cause for A Level i am taking, Accounting, Business Studies and Psychology and i really want to become and Investment Banker
Higher Education (University +) - 3 Answers

Answer 1 :
If you want to become an investment banker, it is technically essential that you take economics a level. it is also advisable that you take maths a level. it is not essential, but would be better than accounting for when you apply for university. as accounting is seen as a soft option. hope this helps. good luck.
Answer 2 :
To be an accountant GCSE maths is fine. You can go through a career as an accountant and work towards being an investment banker but the path will involve lots of economics and even more, rather demanding, mathematics. You need to ask yourself why do you want to be an investment banker and why you did study maths and economics?
Answer 3 :
You seem to be a little confused. An accountant and an investment banker are two totally different career paths. For either, Maths would be an excellent choice of A'level. For investment banking, the standard track is to go to a first rate uni, get a couple of years of work experience as a Financial Analyst and then get an MBA. Best to avoid Business Studies as an undergrad as Business/Business is too narrow. They like to see a broader education. Pretty much anything else works. Law is ideal. To become an accountant, you don't necessarily need to go to university but most do and read Accounting or Maths. However, it is also perfectly possible to read something like Physics or Engineering. They just need to see a logical mind and a good eye for detail.

how to become chartered accountant?

I have an accounting certificate (4 years study) from commercial hight school in tunisia and I want to become chartered accountant in U.K how to do ?and wich studying I need to do?
Higher Education (University +) - 2 Answers

Answer 1 :
To become a chartered accountant in the UK there are two main routes: 1. Straight after high school start working at an accountancy firm. They will put you on a training scheme, and you should be chartered sometime before the age of 23. 2. Go to university, doing a degree in a proper subject (e.g. maths, english, science, engineering, history etc. NOT sports science, media studies, David Beckham studies...). After university start at an accountancy firm, who will again put you on a training scheme. Going to uni takes 3 years, and saves you one year of accountancy training, so you'll be chartered 2 years later.
Answer 2 :
In order to become a chartered accountant you need to take and pass the exams of one of the chartered accountancy bodies. In the UK there are 6 chartered accountancy bodies (ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW, CIPFA, ICAS and ICAI). The decision regarding which set of exams you take depends on which area of accounting you wish to work in. For example, if you want to work in industry as a management accountant then you will be best advised to study for the CIMA exams, if you want to work within the public sector, eg. in the national health service, then you would be best advised to study towards the CIPFA exams. However, if you want to work in public practice as an auditor or tax advisor then the ACCA, ICAEW, ICAS or ICAI exams would be better suited to you. Given that you are from Tunisia you will need to obtain a work permit in order to study within the UK. I'm not sure what level your accounting certificate is, but if you do not have a degree then you would be best advised to study towards one of the accounting technician qualifications (AAT or CAT) before embarking on a chartered accountancy qualification. Given your nationality it might be better for you to study towards the ACCA qualification as it has the highest international profile of all the chartered accountancy bodies and it also has an arrangement with Oxford Brookes University which allows you to apply for a BSc degree in Applied Accountancy when you have achieved part-qualified status by submitting an essay to the university. Whichever route you take it must be appreciated that the exams are very demanding and in addition to passing exams you will need to achieve at least three years practical experience within an accounting environment. http://www.frc.org.uk/images/uploaded/documents/Final%20printers%20file%20key%20facts%20and%20trends%20Nov%2006.pdf http://www.accaglobal.com/students/study_exams/qualifications/degree/ http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AkpBEYB90UpvkVX__kgmT6xJBgx.?qid=20070219112650AAtbTwc

What is a Balance Sheep? An accountant was telling me about a Balance Sheep but what is it?

Corporations - 7 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Balance Sheet Financial accounting, a balance sheet or statement of financial position is a summary of a person's or organization's balances. Assets, liabilities and ownership equity are listed as of a specific date, such as the end of its financial year. A balance sheet is often described as a snapshot of a company's financial condition. Of the four basic financial statements, the balance sheet is the only statement which applies to a single point in time. A company balance sheet has three parts: assets, liabilities and ownership equity. The main categories of assets are usually listed first, and typically in order of liquidity. Assets are followed by the liabilities. The difference between the assets and the liabilities is known as equity or the net assets or the net worth or capital of the company and according to the accounting equation, net worth must equal assets minus liabilities.
Answer 2 :
Tell him to talk properly Balance Sheet
Answer 3 :
It's when you have two sheep. One is heavier than the other so you have to work out how much to feed the other to make them balance. Very technical stuff and definitely not for beginners.
Answer 4 :
Now you know why you need an accountant.
Answer 5 :
Could it have been a balance sheet? Did you really misunderstand it that badly?
Answer 6 :
You must know what a balance beam is. You must know what a sheeps is - those wooly animals that eat grass. Put them together, train them for a bit, and you have a cheap animal act, for circuses that can't afford lion tamers or sea lions. And, if the act bombs, there is always mutton stew. Lions taste too gamy and sea lion are worse.
Answer 7 :

THis is great for the government.. IF you are self employed your off the unemployment list.. Doesn't matter if you make a loss to them. Or have to work 150 hours a week to clear your overheads.

its mine, it was put in yours by error, can you send it to me please
Answer 4 :
Very good if you are willing to work long hours, find the right nitch market, work long hours, establish a broad client base, work long hours and provide great customer service. Did I mention work long hours? I work for a small (3 CPAs, 4 accountants, 5 administrative) accounting firm in a very small nitch (no other firm in the US specializes in the same market, although there are quite a few that offer the same services along with everything else). The firm owner recently built a $300,000 house without a loan. She also works 12 to 18 hours a day, and at least 4 to 6 hours on the weekend. She never leaves the office without at least one or two files in her backpack. It can be done, but be ready to work for it.
Answer 5 :
Not sure what your asking. Firstly you need to make the millions yourself and secondly the accountancy firm will want to train u and get a return from their investment. Maybe you will learn a thing or two which will help. Opportunity exists for all and success depends on personal effort.

Engineering pays the best
Answer 2 :
Comparing Best for Best, the Best chartered accountants will be the company accountants for very large organisations and they can earn lots more than the best level of engineer who does engineering. This is quite hard to answer though - chartered accountant could be a partner in an accounting firm and earn lots, or could be more of an accounts clerk and not earn as much, same with an engineer so tricky to compare the 2. Do what you think you will enjoy. If money is your Driving force, become an industrial diver in the north sea or nigeria - more money there than either will ever get, but risks and rewards come into play here, same with security in some of the less stable countries - Iraq and Afghanistan

Do I have to have an accountant?

Do I have to have an accountant?
I'm only going to be a very a small mini-micro business. If I can do my own tax returns and all my accounts, is it ok NOT to have an accountant and submit all my accounts to the tax office by myself? Many thanks in advance.
Small Business - 10 Answers

Answer 1 :
No you don't have to have an accountant but it can make life easier as they know all the fiddles I mean rules and regs about what you can and can't claim, Unless they can save you more than you have to pay them each year though they really are not worth it as long as your okay doing your own tax.
Answer 2 :
You probably don't have to have an accountant.
Answer 3 :
well i dont think its a legal requirement, however accountants arnt actually that expensive and the time they free up would allow you to work on growing your business. also accountants know the law surrounding tax alot better than you do so they know how much they can bend the rules. when you submit your tax return yourself the tax inspector will go through it with a fine tooth combe! if the accountant does it they tend not to fo over it so much.. a good accountant will always save you more than they charge i always use an accountant its just simply not worth the hassle doing it yourself and its more cost efficient as its a false economy doing it yourself sorry to preach just thought id try to help.
Answer 4 :
Yep. Just make sure you do it right. No obligation to have an accountant.
Answer 5 :
You don't have to have an accountant Though let me tell you from experience that I thought I could do my own tax returns and bookkeeping myself I paid in money a couple years and then had a company review them and they found that not only shouldn't i have had to pay but actually got money back Since then I have had them do my taxes and bookkeeping That way they keep up on the tax laws and keeping records and when it is tax time they have all the numbers right there It is so much easier and I can concentrate on running my business
Answer 6 :
When I started my own small business I decided not to use an accountant and did not have any problems with my tax and VAT returns. However, I took advantage of a 'free health check' offered by a local accountancy firm and they found 'ways' to save me just over £12,000 during 18 months of trading. Their fee was £600 so I considered this a damn good investment. So now I let an accountant look over my affairs once a year and will continue to do so. Remember that accountancy services are 'professional fees' and can be offset 100% against business income. You should also consider your credit rating. If you are going to be a sole trader you will find that you suddenly have an adverse credit rating for mortgage and loan purposes, because your income can not be proven. Only audited accounts will be accepted by the main financial institutions. So to answer your question, no you don't need one, but you will probably find it an advantage to have one. I would also recommend you use a small firm that is used to self employed people and very small businesses, avoid the 'big name' firms. Hope this helps.
Answer 7 :
you probably don't but having a decent one will save you time and money, freeing you up to do the thing you set up in business for in the first place!
Answer 8 :
If you are earning under £15,000 per annum it is not advisable. It is now possible to fill in a short tax return for earnings below £15,000. It also depends on your abilities to keep records of earnings and expenditure. Accounts books are available to buy along with accounts programmes which makes life a little easier especially if you have the same amounts going in /out.
Answer 9 :
No way. If you can do it yourself, then you're set. The only thing a good accountant may be able to do is suggest ways to save $$, including additional deductions...
Answer 10 :
no you do not need legally to have an accountant. The tax office are also very helpful with advice for filling in your tax return. Make sure though you keep all your receipts and relevant paperwork for at least 6 years.

Answer 2 :
To be Honest ive never heard of an Assistant Accountant(or similar). Im sure you wont dive into the deep end straight away. In most jobs you work up a ladder. (Smaller tasks first and then the workload/difficulty is increase with experience) Well here are the basics for an Accountant: Work Activities Accountants help organisations and individuals manage their money. They examine financial records and statements and check them for accuracy. This allows them to provide their clients with a clear picture of their financial activities. All limited companies must, by law, be externally audited. An external audit is a check carried out by a qualified person who is not connected with the company. When doing an audit, the accountant has to examine accounting systems as well as check figures. Only accountants who hold a recognised audit qualification may work as registered external auditors. Some accountants specialise in taxation. Accountants work in various settings: ■industry and commerce where they tend to be based in one company ■public sector where they may work for bodies such as the National Health Service (NHS) or the local council ■private practice (sometimes known as public practice) where they work for firms of accountants whose clients can vary from individuals to commercial and government organisations. In both industry and the public sector, accountants are concerned with the day-to-day finances of their organisation. They provide analyses of costs and report on the future financial implications of management decisions. Some accountants who work for accountancy firms audit the accounts of their clients to ensure that the financial records give a true picture of the client's activities. Some accountancy firms also act as management consultants and advise clients on tax planning and ways to improve profits. Pay and Opportunities Salaries for accountants vary, depending on location and sector. The pay rates given below are approximate. According to a recent Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) survey, the average salary for accountants in England and Wales 2 years post qualification is £47,500 a year, rising to £52,000 for those 2-4 years post qualification, and up to £87,000 for those qualified 20 years or more. In Scotland accountants, on average, earn more than this in the North East (because of the influence of the oil industry) but less, on average, within the Central Belt. (Source: ICAS/CA Magazines survey) Banking and capital markets attract the highest salaries of around £94,000 average, for experienced accountants, while at the other end of the scale experienced accountants in manufacturing and engineering earn average salaries of around £68,000 a year. Government and not-for-profit organisations attract average salaries of around £55,000 a year, for experienced accountants. Accountants usually work 35-40 hours Monday to Friday. However, at peak times, they may need to work late or at weekends, for example, to produce monthly financial reports. Similarly, they may have to work extra hours to finalise accounts at the end of the financial year. Entry Routes and Training To qualify as an accountant, you need to register with one of the appropriate professional bodies. You then combine on-the-job training with part-time study and written examinations. Most accountancy trainees (about 90%) are graduates. Your degree need not be in accountancy. The relevant professional bodies are: (Careers Scotland website) ■Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) ■Association of International Accountants (AIA) ■Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) ■Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland (ICAS) ■Chartered Institute of Public Finan

Answer 1 :
Anyone can call themselves an "accountant" but any client is bound to ask what professional association/institute you belong to. An unqualified accountant cannot audit a company's books, and there are tighter rules for the management of charities now. If you want to work for a company as an accountant you will need a qualification. Professional associations also provide advice and support for accountants, as well as ensuring their members are knowledgeable and experienced. What's wrong with ACCA? There are other accounting qualifications from AAT, ICAEW/ICAS, CIMA and CIPFA
Answer 2 :
I started training to be an accountant when I was 16, I am on doing an AAT qualification and then will probably do ACCA or CIMA, I would advise you to take a qualification as you will need that to get the experience as most places only employ people if they have a qualification or are training to get a qualification

do i have to supplie my personal bank details to the accountant when i am a partner in a business?

do i have to supplie my personal bank details to the accountant when i am a partner in a business?
i have recently set up a small business with 3 partners and i just want to know if my accountant has to have my personal bank details when he does the accounts

Answer 1 :
No you don't, but there should not be any reason why you wouldn't want your Accountant to see your personal bank account details. The only reason to keep your personal banking details away from your Accountant is in order to hide things from that Accountant. Refusing to provide details to an Accountant always hints that you are hiding things and not declaring everything that you should declare. If you want the best possible service from your Accountant then you need to be as open and honest with him as possible.

I want to become an accountant?

I want to become an accountant?
I want to train to become an accountant, but I am 33 years old and haven't studied for years.......only to GCSE level too. Does anyone have any advice on which courses would be best, or the best course of action to take? Thanks.

Answer 1 :
There are several paths to become a qualified accountant and there are several disciplines and institutes from which you may get certifications. All depend on what you want to achieve. If you want to develop your own practise or join a firm which does book keeping and final accounts, You have to get ACAEW, ACCA or MAAT. If you like to work in industry ACMA or ACCA would be helpful. But if you aim public sector CIPFA is best. But those are not restrictive. If you have a full time job, it would be necessary to do a evening or week end course. If you are unemployed you may register for full time course. As it appears that you have not your GESE AL or degree it is advisable to register with AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) which is treated as supporting qualification for other reputed qualifications. But there are accountants who practise only with MAAT. Please see the link below which explains evey thing needed. https://www.aat.org.uk/content/item152867/
